James Karpowicz was born the fourth of five children to working class parents in the dingy inner city of Cleveland, Ohio. The twins died very young and Mr. Karpowicz's remaining siblings, parents, grandmother and an uncle all co-habitated a century old, ramshackle two bedroom house on the edge of the rusted and billowing steel mills. The modesty of this environment paled in comparison to the challenges of living that his Russian grandmother had endured some thirty odd years earlier. After emigrating from Europe to Canada, her family proceeded to dig a hole in the frozen forest floor. This thatch covered pit served as both a home and a stepping stone in the search for a brighter tomorrow.
As a young child, James dealt with numerous sound, speech and sensory dysfunctions. He spent endless hours off by himself drawing as a means of communication. These early years evolved into a passion for expression that Mr. Karpowicz still acts upon today. Following cues from his family's past, James soon realized that life should be encountered with positive resolve, tempered by a healthy dose
of irreverant humor. His artwork began to champion these ideas with colorful and whimsical paintings and collages.
Mr. Karpowicz went on to receive a BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art, a fellowship from Yale University and numerous awards in the Visual Arts. He helped co-found the arts organization Art Without Walls with fellow artist, Claire Coleman, and the two were later married. They moved permanantly to New York in 1993 and both have showed artwork domestically and abroad.
James and Claire have two sons, Maximillian (7) and Jasper John (2) and the family currently resides in the Catskill Mountains, a short distance from New York City.
